New Years EVE ! !
San Francisco, California - Robert Cray preformed at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium for a News Years Eve concert. The Memphis Horns, Wayne Jackson and Andrew Love accompanied Robert for a 90 minute show that brought back old times. Then around midnight Boz Scaggs rang in the New Year. After packing up the band's gear I went back to the hotel for some sleep, I had an early flight home the next morning. I was awakened sometime later to the strange sounds of someone calling "Za a a a-ck". It was Cray wanting me to party and drink-in the new year, so I would look like shit, on the flight home in a few hours. I wasn't falling for that old trick. © 1998 G. Zaccaria
TBA Brasil Tour
San Francisco, California - The Cray camp is making plans for a Brasilian tour, later this year, during the 1st week in June. Three shows are planed for three cities, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Belo Horizonte.
Cray Down Under Tour
Auckland, New Zealand - After three shows in Hawaii Robert Cray returns to New Zealand and Australia. It has been almost 8 years since his last visit. I still have fond memories of the previous tours with Robert Cray and John Hiatt. Surfers Paridise, on the Gold Coast, is where Tom and I tried surfing for the first time. I got up on my knees, riding a small wave, only to nose dive to the bottom. It would take some practice to artfully cut waves like a pro. Tom forgot to close his mouth before wiping out and drank a couple of gallons of saltwater, then turned green. I notice The Beach Patrol waving on shore for everybody to get out. continued next column

After swiming back to shore he said there were some LARGE waves coming and it would be very dangerous to remain out. Back to the present, Robert preformed on Kona the "Big Island", Maui and Honolulu. Except for a GK 800-RB bass amp that blew-up at turn-on early before the 1st sound check, all great shows. Then it was off to Melbourne, Australia. As we landed, I could see how brown everything was from the summer drought. This would change, after two shows in Melbourne and one in Sydney, it started raining. It rained all night and the streets looked like rivers the next day. The bus ride to the airport had to detour to avoid some really deep water. Then Robert had the driver stop so he could rescue some cigars stashed in the luggage bay. We made it to the airport without any real problems and hopped a short flight to Auckland for one show at the Power Station. I was able to visit with my cousin David whom I hadn't seen in almost 20 years. We had lunch together at a nearby pub and caught up on all the gossip from the last few years. © 1998 G. Zaccaria
