"Sweet Potato Pie" Rehearsals

April 29, 1997

Its the beginning of The Robert Cray Band Sweet Potato Pie Tour and San Rafael Studios California is where rehearsals were held. Steve, Bob and I went to the Band's warehouse and spent the 1st day getting everything, that we would need for the tour, together, tested and checked out. The nexted day was spent loading a truck and driving to San Rafael, then loading in to the studio. San Rafaels Studios is a great place for rehearsals. They have a large room, for the Band, a control room, shop area, and lunch room. The Band spent the days beginning at noon rehearsing till 5 or 6pm. We started our days at 10am preping everything for the road. Lots of accumalated damage from the previous tour has taking a heavy toll and new cases had to be stenciled.

Wayne and Andrew of the "Real Memphis Horns" arrived on Wednesday. It was really great to see and hear them play with Robert. It brought back good memories from past tours. We all are looking forward to having them, on tour with us, part of the time. They are a definite asset to the show.

The Robert Cray Band Sweet Potato Pie Tour Begins

Our first stop was the Performing Arts Center in Anchorage Alaska. This is a very nice venue and the first show of the tour went great. We flew to SFO then drove to Fresno. By 9 pm we had put in 12 hours of travel and I said "I'm done navigating" then Steve let go of the steering wheel. We quickly decided to work over time. The next show was at the Tower Theater, then to San Francisco for two shows at the Fillmore. This place has history all over it. Hanging in the catering room are posters from all the past concerts. Also a large poster of Janis Joplin nude, hangs on the wall in the bar. The Band smoked both nights. Then it was home for a couple of days.

Some last minute scheduling sent Bob and I to The Tonight Show in Burbank. My brother Dave came down from his office to catch soundcheck, then we went to have lunch across the street at Johnny Carson Park.

Humpreys By The Sea, All venues should be built this way. The Hotel and the gig are the same place. If your job title is House Sound or Lights, just walk 10 feet from your room's balcony to the House Mix area. Walk another 200 feet and there are some great hotel rooms backstage for production and dressing rooms. We had a great show and our old buddy Dave from Sound Image came by to say hi. Then the next day we flew to Denver. We rented some mini vans and drove to Boulder Colorado for a live Radio taping of E-Town. The band equipment was right behind us until the truck drivers decided to unload it at the Fox Theater, and the show was at the Boulder Theater. The janitor at the Fox even went and changed the marque to read "The Robert Cray Band". The gear got there just in time for the show. The next show was at the Ogden Theater in Denver Colorado. Then it was back home for 2 days.
