A Slice "Sweet Potato Pie"
March 25, 1997
About a month ago I recieved my demo copy, it was a cassette, of "Sweet Potato Pie", the New album by Robert Cray, But don't look for it in the stores until May 6th. I gave it a brief listen and the demo version I got starts off with "The Memphis Horns" on a song titled "Nothing Against You". I like this song, I love the Horns, and the major chord to the bridge is great. Ofcourse the guitar solo is excellent and will be even better live. Is that Otis Redding on the next song? No, its "Do That For Me", a song about giving Himself and wanting more from Her. Definitely Memphis Soul. Next comes the Blues with the song titled "Back Home", a warning to those who wander. The tape echo ending is unique. "The One In The Middle", is about a dreamer, who is still in love. These first four songs sound like they could have been recorded at Stax, especially the horn parts. Robert's guitar and Magnatone vibrato, make their shimmering sounds on a ballad called "Little Birds", This is one of my favorite songs, well why not? It does have stereo vibrato. This ends side one of my demo tape.
I flipped the tape over to a remake of Otis Redding's "Trick Or Treat", complete with The Memphis Horns,
