Little Coffee Shops of Horror
"K-2, Super Jack, Super Skunk, Northern Lights, White Widow, and Royal Queen," these are just a few of the varieties of marijuana that are available in the famous coffee shops of the Netherlands. Warning to the novice smoker: They grow some butt kicking weed in this country! But not all cities have coffee shops and some cities have local laws limiting open hours from 4pm till whenever?. We arrived in Rotterdam in the morning and after checking into the hotel immediately went in search for these purveyors of bud and java. After walking for a few city blocks through some shopping centers we stumbled upon a shop on the second floor over looking the street. Great place for some coffee and a joint. As I was sampling the local cousine I spotted some friends we knew. It seems they had the same idea. Important note, you are only allowed to hold a few grams. You can easily get around this by visiting several coffee shops. We also found this place called "Viva Sativa" in Lintz, Austria. see photo above Now if your in Switzerland look for names like "Discount Hampf" in Lugano and "Natur Prodik" in Lucerne or look for a "hampf" store in the telephone book. Refer to it as "popourri" for the fragrance only. They call it this because you have a tendency to buy too much and then you have to leave it behind. This became evident to us on a one-off to Lugano. We arrived in Switzerland around 12 noon. Some of the crew went to the local hemp shop and each bought 7-grams of the weed djour. We met back at the hotel and after doing the math, realized we had, collectively among us, an ounce of deadly marijuana to smoke up in the next 24 to 36 hours. This could have been a problem since we would be flying back to the US after the show. But we started on it right away and didn't have to leave very much of it behind. Europe is finally getting hip.

Robert Cray Opens For Joe Cocker "Take Your Skates Off?"
Robert Cray played the opening slot for the Joe Cocker Tour that started in Germany. After two headlining shows in Holland, for the USO, Cray joined the Cocker tour in Magdenburg. The next 3 weeks was a well organized tour of the finest Olympic Sport Halles in Europe complete with ice floors. Sometimes they were covered with wood, sometimes with canvas, but there was always a frozen ice rink underneath. Zigzaging across Austria, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, and Slovenia we were able to see lots interesting and beautiful places. The bus drove mostly in the daytime between gigs since the Cray crew didn't have to work until 3pm we had lots of extra time. The catering for the tour, by Eat Your Heart Out, was excellent. For the crew and I catering was a warm place to congregate everyday while we waited for Cocker's sound check to finish. Joe Cocker put on a great show every night. The performance included old songs like "Feelin Alright" and "Hitchcock Railway" as well as some newer compositions.
While on this tour, we contacted Robert's old Bass player Richard Cousins. Richard invited us to an open jam at a club in Wintergreen outside of Zurich, Swizterland. So we loaded up the bus and headed out for a really fun night off. see photo above We a had a great time and Gary and I got to jam, with some of the band members from Hendrix/Cousins and Robert Cray's band. © 2000 Zack
