The Venus Model 480

Robert Cray called and asked me to find him one of those "Stereo" Magnatones. Well I found this 480 on the East coast and had it shipped to our shop. After alot of repair work it finally fit the bill. The Custom 480 originally sold for $499.95. It has 13 tubes, 1 transistor. The 2 input channels (each with high & low gain) are preamp'd by 6EU7's. Each has a Loudness, Bass, and Treble control. There is also a stereo input. Stereo vibrato is handled by 6CG7's and a 12BH7 to amplify the oscillator. A 6DR7 drives the input to the reverb pan, and a 2N306 transistor takes care of the return. Phase inversion is acomplished with twin 12AU7's. Four 6973's drive the stereo transformers along with two 12" Oxford #12L5N-3 Speakers (date code: 465-208) and two 5"x7" midrange Speakers. Note the "Custom" logo is from a Ford truck.
Dimensions: 26.250" wide, 11" deep, 21.250" high, Approx. Wt. 60 lbs.

Approx. 50 watts Stereo total (25 watts per amp)

The Venus Model 480Here is another model 480 that came in to our shop. It had some erroneous resistor in the circuit causing problems and a missing back panel. The guys in our shop made a new back panel and gave it a complete inspection to match the schematic. It has all the original knobs, speakers, electronics and footswitch. Plus a canvas cover! Nice sounding and it's in excellent condition. The date codes for the 12L5N-3 Oxford speakers are: 465-205. The 6107 output transformer date code is: 606-1-48

Scott invited me to take photos of his custom 480 when I was in Seattle. He found it at a swap meet in the trunk of an old music store owner's car. The dealer wanted $200 but all Scott had was $176. The dealer sold it. Scott recieved lots of offers for the amp when he carried it back to the car. Here are some details. It was made by Estey Electronics, Torrance, Calif. It has two matching 12L5N-1, 12-inch Oxford speakers (date codes: 465-109) with magnet number 4605. The output transformers are numbered: 6107 (date code: 606-1-39). Reverb pan number: 6139 25002. I was able to measure the DC-ohms on the reverb pan, output = 177.6 ohms DC R and the input = 190.5 ohms DC R. This amp had the original Estey labeled rectifier and power tubes when this photo was taken. Scott has since sold it and the new owner has it up for sale.

The Venus Model 480Here is another model 480. Richard shipped this amp to our shop for repairs. It needed some new tubes, touch up some solder joints, a miss wired lead to pin 2 of 6DR7, and replace wrong reverb amp transitor. The guys in our shop got it working properly. It sounds great with the original speakers.
